Tottenham have stepped up their summer recruitment drive by focusing on two major midfield targets, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, after securing the signing of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer. Spurs are determined to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s squad ahead of the new season and view Fernandes as a key addition, with growing confidence that a deal worth around £85 million can be agreed with West Ham.
The highly-rated Portuguese midfielder impressed despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League and has attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester United. However, Tottenham believe they are well-positioned to win the race for the 21-year-old as negotiations continue.
At the same time, Tottenham’s pursuit of Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has received a major boost. According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are now the only club actively in the race for the Italian international, with other interested sides no longer being linked with a move. Romano insists the situation remains one to watch, but the deal is very much alive.
Newcastle are understood to have rejected an £80 million offer from Tottenham and are holding out for a fee closer to £100 million. Despite the high valuation, Spurs remain interested, particularly as Tonali’s current salary would fit comfortably within the club’s wage structure.
The 26-year-old’s reputation continues to soar following an impressive season on Tyneside, and his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes has previously described him as an “unbelievable player” and a “massive player” for the club. Guimaraes also praised Tonali’s versatility and intelligence in midfield, qualities that would make him an ideal fit in De Zerbi’s system.
With Tottenham already active in the transfer market and continuing to target elite midfield talent, Fernandes and Tonali have emerged as two of the club’s biggest priorities as they look to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level next season.
