Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, with reports indicating that the Portuguese midfielder is open to joining the North London club this summer. The development represents a major step forward for Spurs as they continue an ambitious transfer campaign under Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham have already moved aggressively in the market, completing deals for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka as they look to strengthen a squad that has struggled in recent Premier League seasons. The club’s hierarchy and De Zerbi are determined to complete the bulk of their transfer business before pre-season begins, giving the Italian coach ample time to prepare his side for the new campaign.
Fernandes has emerged as one of De Zerbi’s top midfield targets, with the Spurs boss eager to add creativity, energy and technical quality to the centre of the pitch. Reports suggest Tottenham are already in discussions with West Ham over a potential deal, and the player’s willingness to make the switch has removed one of the biggest obstacles to an agreement.
The 21-year-old is also attracting interest from Manchester United, creating competition for his signature. However, Tottenham remain confident of securing the midfielder and are reportedly prepared to meet West Ham’s £85 million valuation through a structured payment package if necessary.
Spurs are not stopping there. The club remain in talks over a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with De Zerbi keen to bring both players to North London as part of a major midfield overhaul. In addition, Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney is being monitored as another potential addition following his impressive performances in the Championship last season.
The pursuit of multiple midfielders suggests further changes could be on the horizon. Tottenham are unlikely to make João Palhinha’s stay permanent following his loan spell, while uncertainty also surrounds the futures of several current midfielders. Lucas Bergvall is reportedly considering a move elsewhere in search of regular playing time, while Pape Matar Sarr could face increased competition if De Zerbi continues to prioritise experienced options.
With Fernandes now reportedly giving his approval to the move, Tottenham’s ambitious summer rebuild appears to be gathering serious momentum as the club looks to return to the upper end of the Premier League table.
