Tottenham Hotspur have earned widespread praise for the speed and efficiency of their recruitment this summer, but the club’s willingness to part with several academy graduates has divided opinion among supporters.
Spurs have taken a ruthless approach to trimming their youth ranks, allowing Tynan Thompson, Alfie Devine and Will Lankshear to leave. Despite the emotional reaction from fans, the North London club have generated around £34 million from those departures.
Dorrington’s proposed exit breaks down
Tottenham also looked set to sanction another academy departure, with 21-year-old centre-back Alfie Dorrington attracting serious interest from Polish outfit Pogon Szczecin.
Reports suggested the defender had even arranged a medical as the move neared completion. However, the transfer has now collapsed after Dorrington reportedly had a late change of heart.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that the young defender has decided against moving to Poland and is instead prioritising a transfer to a club in England.
Dorrington spent last season on loan at League Two side Salford City, following an earlier temporary spell with Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. Although first-team opportunities at Spurs have been limited, he did make his Premier League debut as a substitute against Southampton in December 2024.
Jacobs wrote on X: “Alfie Dorrington’s move to Pogon is off. Player had a change of heart and is looking for a club ideally in England.”
More Tottenham exits remain possible
While Dorrington’s future remains unresolved, Tottenham are still expected to oversee several departures before the transfer window closes.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been linked with a move away after being omitted from the club’s pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia.
Cristian Romero also continues to attract interest from Inter Milan and Barcelona, with speculation suggesting the Argentine defender could leave this summer.
Reports indicate that up to five players may still depart before the deadline, while highly rated youngster Ashley Phillips has also emerged as a transfer target after impressing during his Championship loan spell last season.
Even with more exits on the horizon, Roberto De Zerbi is expected to continue strengthening his squad as Tottenham push ahead with their summer rebuild.
