Tottenham Defender Micky van de Ven Faces Red Card Controversy After Chelsea Clash
Tottenham Hotspur captain Micky van de Ven has come under scrutiny following a dangerous challenge on Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo during Spurs’ 2-0 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge.
The Dutch defender escaped with a yellow card after making a late, high sliding challenge that forced Caicedo to jump over his raised leg to avoid a potentially serious injury.
The incident occurred shortly before Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer became involved in a confrontation with Tottenham’s Mateus Fernandes. The resulting altercation attracted considerable attention, with several players receiving yellow cards.
Tim Sherwood Questions Van de Ven’s Challenge

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood criticised the nature of Van de Ven’s tackle, arguing that the defender was fortunate Caicedo managed to avoid the full force of the challenge.
Sherwood suggested that the incident could have resulted in a serious injury had the Chelsea midfielder failed to jump out of the way. He also warned that Van de Ven needed to be more careful when committing to such challenges.
Sherwood referred to the defender’s previous high-profile tackle on Alexander Isak, stressing that reckless challenges could have serious consequences for opponents.
He believes Van de Ven must improve his judgement when making tackles and avoid throwing himself into challenges without maintaining proper control of his body.
Dermot Gallagher Defends the Referee’s Decision
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher disagreed with the suggestion that Van de Ven deserved a straight red card. He argued that officials needed to be cautious about issuing dismissals and believed referee Chris Kavanagh handled the situation appropriately by showing a yellow card.
Gallagher also suggested that stopping play immediately and booking the Tottenham defender would have prevented the incident from escalating further.
However, Sherwood maintained that Van de Ven’s challenge was reckless and that the defender needed to learn from such incidents.
Chelsea’s Disciplinary Problems Add to the Drama
The controversy surrounding Van de Ven was followed by further trouble involving Chelsea midfielder Palmer, who was eventually sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Conor Gallagher.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also questioned whether Chelsea midfielder Morgan Rogers should have received a red card for a late challenge on Gallagher.
Despite the controversy, Tottenham secured an important victory at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea’s disciplinary problems contributing to the dramatic closing stages.
The debate over Van de Ven’s tackle has nevertheless raised fresh questions about how referees assess dangerous challenges and whether the Tottenham captain was fortunate to remain on the pitch.
