Former Referee Graham Barber Reveals Why Cole Palmer Could Have Seen Red

Graham Barber Explains Why Palmer Could Have Been Sent Off

Barber maintained that although Palmer’s second challenge later in the match was also worthy of punishment, the earlier confrontation with Fernandes was particularly disappointing.

He explained that the incident could have resulted in a straight red card, even though the referee ultimately chose to issue a yellow. In his view, Palmer’s reaction was unnecessary and difficult to defend.

The former official also highlighted the importance of ensuring that two yellow-card offences result in a sending-off when appropriate. Palmer was eventually dismissed after receiving a second booking for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher.

The Chelsea midfielder’s dismissal came after his side had fallen behind to a Mike Penders own goal. Tottenham capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Mathys Tel scoring a superb late goal to seal a 2-0 victory.

The result marked a memorable away win for Tottenham, while Chelsea were left to reflect on their disappointing performance and disciplinary problems.

Palmer’s earlier confrontation with Fernandes remains a major talking point, with Barber’s assessment adding further weight to the argument that the Chelsea star was fortunate to escape an immediate dismissal.
