Jamie O’Hara Slams Tottenham Summer Signing in Furious Rant

Jamie O’Hara Launches Furious Attack on Tottenham Defender Jan Paul van Hecke

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has strongly criticised new Spurs defender Jan Paul van Hecke following the club’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Tottenham had to settle for a point after a dramatic encounter on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Despite creating several opportunities, Roberto De Zerbi’s team struggled to turn their chances into goals before Dominic Solanke scored a late equaliser.

Manchester United initially took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 73rd minute. The forward found space inside the penalty area and finished brilliantly, leaving Tottenham with work to do.

However, O’Hara was particularly unhappy with Van Hecke’s defensive performance during the goal. The former Spurs midfielder believed the Dutch centre-back gave Mbeumo too much time and space to turn before shooting.

Speaking on talkSPORT, O’Hara questioned the defender’s quality and expressed frustration with Tottenham’s decision to sign him from Brighton during the summer transfer window.

The pundit also criticised the club’s recruitment team, questioning who approved the transfer and suggesting that Tottenham had made a serious mistake.

O’Hara went further by comparing Van Hecke unfavourably with Luka Vuskovic, expressing his disappointment that Tottenham had allowed the young defender to leave while bringing in a player he believes has struggled to meet expectations.

The former midfielder also argued that Van Hecke has found it difficult to cope with opponents in one-on-one situations, raising concerns about his ability to perform consistently at the highest level.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham winger Chris Waddle also expressed concerns about the defender’s involvement in Manchester United’s goal.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Waddle acknowledged that Tottenham had controlled much of the match but pointed out that Van Hecke appeared uncomfortable when Mbeumo received the ball and prepared to shoot.

Despite the criticism, Tottenham managed to rescue a point in the closing moments. Playing with 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for an altercation with Luke Shaw, Spurs found a way back into the contest.

Sandro Tonali delivered a cross into the penalty area, and Solanke rose to head the ball past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens in stoppage time.

Although the late goal prevented another defeat, Tottenham remain under pressure as they continue searching for their first league victory of the season.

The result has increased scrutiny on De Zerbi’s team, with questions being raised about their defensive performances, recruitment decisions and overall consistency.

Van Hecke will now face pressure to respond to the criticism and demonstrate that he can become an important player for Tottenham as the season progresses.
