Liverpool increasingly likely to sanction January exit for Federico Chiesa in ‘agonising’ situation

Liverpool are reportedly becoming increasingly prepared to allow Federico Chiesa to leave Anfield when the January transfer window opens, with the Italian forward’s situation at the club becoming increasingly difficult.

The 29-year-old was expected to enjoy more opportunities following the change in Liverpool’s coaching staff, having struggled to establish himself during his time under former manager Arne Slot.

However, things have reportedly become even more frustrating for the former Juventus winger under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Chiesa struggling for playing time

According to Dean Jones of Flashscore, Chiesa’s lack of involvement has made a January departure increasingly possible.

Despite recovering from a back injury almost a month ago, the Italian has reportedly managed just two minutes of football under Iraola.

His limited involvement has raised serious questions about his long-term future at Anfield.

Chiesa was also surprisingly left out of Liverpool’s matchday squad for their recent Premier League encounter against Arsenal, despite being available for selection.

This has further highlighted how far he has fallen in the manager’s attacking plans.

Liverpool’s attacking options making things difficult

One of the major reasons behind Chiesa’s difficult situation is the competition for places in Liverpool’s forward line.

The arrivals of Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola have increased competition, while the impressive performances of young forward Lewis Koumas have reportedly pushed Chiesa further down the pecking order.

Liverpool also have Hugo Ekitike expected to return from injury, creating another selection headache for the manager.

With so many attacking options available, Chiesa faces an increasingly difficult challenge trying to secure regular playing time.

Three Italian clubs could offer Chiesa an escape route

A return to Italy is emerging as a possible solution for the Liverpool forward.

According to the report, Lazio, Inter Milan and Roma are among the clubs that could explore the possibility of bringing him back to Serie A.

Chiesa previously played for Juventus before joining Liverpool in 2024, and returning to Italian football could give him the opportunity to rebuild his career.

However, any potential transfer will depend on the financial arrangement Liverpool are prepared to accept.

January could decide Chiesa’s Liverpool future

Chiesa’s situation is becoming increasingly concerning, especially considering that he arrived at Anfield hoping to revive his career and establish himself as an important player.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane even questioned whether Chiesa was still at Liverpool during an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, highlighting how little attention the forward has received because of his limited involvement.

Unless Liverpool suffer a significant injury crisis in attack, opportunities for the Italian could remain extremely limited.

For Liverpool, allowing him to leave could also help create more room in an already crowded attacking department.

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, a January departure is increasingly being viewed as a realistic possibility.
