Szymon Marciniak to Referee Liverpool vs Villarreal – One Positive Sign for the Reds Despite Controversial History

UEFA has confirmed that Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will officiate Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Liverpool will welcome the Spanish side as they look to maintain their perfect start to this season’s Champions League campaign. The Reds have already secured victories against Atletico Madrid and LASK and will be determined to collect another three points in front of their home supporters.

Marciniak Appointed for Liverpool vs Villarreal

Liverpool confirmed the appointment on Monday, with Marciniak set to take charge of the highly anticipated encounter.

His fellow Polish officials Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik will serve as assistant referees. Wojciech Myc has been appointed as the fourth official, while Piotr Lasyk will oversee VAR duties, assisted by Germany’s Benjamin Brand.

A Promising Record for Liverpool

Marciniak’s appointment could be an encouraging sign for Liverpool, considering their previous results under the experienced official.

The Polish referee has overseen seven Liverpool matches, with the Merseyside club winning five of them.

More encouragingly, his most recent Liverpool assignment was their 2-0 victory over Villarreal at Anfield in the Champions League semi-final in April 2022.

That result will give Liverpool supporters another reason to feel optimistic ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, although past results do not guarantee a similar outcome this time.

Why Liverpool Fans Have Concerns About Marciniak

Despite Liverpool’s generally positive record under Marciniak, the referee has also been involved in matches that left Reds supporters frustrated.

During Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain in November 2018, supporters were unhappy that Marco Verratti was not sent off following a high challenge on Joe Gomez.

Marciniak was also in charge when Liverpool lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano in February 2020. That match was remembered by many Liverpool supporters for Atletico’s gamesmanship and the controversial incidents surrounding the contest.

Consequently, although Liverpool have enjoyed more victories than defeats under the Polish official, his previous involvement in those matches remains a talking point among the Anfield faithful.

Can Liverpool Repeat Their 2022 Success?

Liverpool will hope Marciniak’s latest appointment brings another positive result, particularly given their previous 2-0 victory over Villarreal at Anfield.

With the Reds aiming to extend their winning run in Europe, they will need to concentrate on their performance and avoid allowing refereeing decisions to become a distraction.

Villarreal will arrive hoping to cause problems, but Liverpool will be determined to use their home advantage and continue their impressive Champions League start.
