Andy Robertson Explains What Tottenham Need to Change
Andy Robertson has spoken openly about Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the new Premier League campaign, insisting that the club must move beyond the disappointment of the previous two seasons.
The Scotland international joined Spurs during the summer after spending nine successful years at L isiverpool. He was one of several new arrivals brought in as Tottenham attempted to rebuild the squad and begin a new chapter under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
However, the early results have been disappointing. Tottenham went into the international break without a league victory after collecting only two points from their opening five matches. Their struggles have continued despite a major investment in the squad during the summer transfer window.
Robertson believes one of Tottenham’s biggest problems is psychological. He feels the difficult experiences of the previous seasons are still affecting the players when matches become challenging.
According to Robertson, Spurs need to stop allowing past disappointments to influence their performances. He believes the new players and coaching staff have a responsibility to help create a fresh mentality within the squad.
The defender pointed to Tottenham’s recent matches as evidence. He explained that the team can play well for long periods but sometimes reacts badly after conceding a goal. Instead of immediately responding and continuing to play with confidence, the players can become hesitant and lose their composure.
Robertson also highlighted the difference in Tottenham’s attitude when they manage to score. He observed that after getting a goal back, the players suddenly become more confident, show more personality and begin demanding the ball.
For Robertson, that confidence and aggression cannot only appear after Tottenham are already behind. He believes the team needs to show the same mentality throughout matches.
The experienced full-back also acknowledged that the supporters have been through difficult times. Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League in each of the previous two seasons, leaving a lasting impact on the atmosphere surrounding the club.
Robertson believes the fans understandably still carry some of that frustration, but the players must now give them something new to believe in.
His message is essentially that Tottenham have to treat the current season as the beginning of a new journey rather than allowing previous failures to define them.
The defender’s comments come after another difficult result against Aston Villa, when Spurs suffered a 3-2 defeat despite scoring their first Premier League goals of the campaign. De Zerbi subsequently described his team as fragile and inconsistent.
Tottenham’s heavy summer spending has increased expectations, but Robertson believes rebuilding confidence and developing a stronger mentality will take more than simply signing new players.
The arrival of experienced players such as Robertson is therefore important beyond their performances on the pitch. The former Liverpool player is expected to use his experience to help the younger and newer members of the squad deal with difficult moments.
Robertson’s central message is clear: Tottenham cannot continue carrying the disappointment of the past. The players need to believe in the new project, remain confident when things go against them and show the same positive mentality for the full 90 minutes.
With the Premier League campaign still in its early stages, Spurs now have an opportunity to change their direction. But according to Robertson, that change has to begin with the mentality of the players themselves.
