Liverpool could reunite Antoine Semenyo with former boss Andoni Iraola following new Manchester City twist

Liverpool could reunite Antoine Semenyo with Andoni Iraola amid fresh Manchester City development

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Manchester City attackers Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku as the possibility of major changes at the Etihad continues to attract attention.

According to a report from a source on X, Liverpool could consider making a move for either player if Manchester City are eventually forced to sell players following the outcome of the Premier League’s investigation into the club.

The situation is connected to the reported 114 charges facing Manchester City. Any potential punishment would also be subject to an appeal, meaning there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding what could happen and when.

Would Liverpool pursue Doku or Semenyo?

Both players would offer significant attacking quality, but their situations are somewhat different from Liverpool’s perspective.

Doku primarily operates from the left and would face considerable competition for that position at Anfield. Liverpool already have several left-sided options, including Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz.

The Belgian winger has also played regularly on the right during his career, giving him some tactical flexibility. However, Liverpool may have little reason to add another naturally left-sided winger to an already well-stocked position.

Semenyo, meanwhile, could represent a different proposition.

The Ghana international is capable of operating on the right and was previously linked with Liverpool before ultimately joining Manchester City from Bournemouth.

Semenyo already has a connection with Iraola

One factor that could make a potential Liverpool move particularly interesting is Semenyo’s previous relationship with Andoni Iraola.

Before moving to Manchester City, Semenyo worked under Iraola at Bournemouth. The forward developed significantly during that period and became an important part of the manager’s high-intensity style.

Liverpool appointed Iraola as their new head coach in 2026 after his successful spell at Bournemouth, creating the possibility of the pair working together again.

Liverpool had previously been interested in Semenyo, but the winger eventually moved to Manchester City. Marc Guehi also ended up at City after previously being linked with Liverpool, leaving the Reds without both players.

If Semenyo were to become available, his previous experience with Iraola could therefore make a reunion at Anfield an intriguing possibility.

Manchester City’s situation remains unclear

Despite the speculation, a potential transfer is far from certain.

The Premier League has not yet publicly confirmed a final verdict regarding Manchester City’s reported 114 charges. Should an official decision be reached, City would also have the opportunity to appeal.

As a result, it is still unclear whether Manchester City would actually be forced into selling players, which players could become available or what financial consequences the club might face.

For now, Liverpool’s reported interest in Semenyo remains a possibility rather than an established transfer plan.

A potential City player sale could change the situation considerably, but there are still several stages to go before Semenyo could realistically become available to Liverpool.
