Graham Potter gives Alexander Isak game-time hint
Sweden manager Graham Potter has suggested that Liverpool striker Alexander Isak could start all four of Sweden’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches, although he made it clear that Isak will not be expected to play the full 90 minutes in every game.
Sweden have a busy international schedule, with four matches across 11 days:
Sweden vs Romania — September 2. Sweden vs Poland — September 28
Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Sweden — October 2 Romania vs Sweden — October 5
Potter was asked whether Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres could potentially start every game. His response was essentially yes — but with careful management of their minutes. He said there was “no chance” they would play every minute of all four matches.
What this means for Liverpool
The situation is particularly relevant to Liverpool because Isak has become an important part of the team’s attack since recovering from his previous injury problems.
The 27-year-old has already played 507 minutes for Liverpool this season, starting every Premier League and Champions League match he has featured in. He has also scored four goals and provided one assist in seven appearances.
Potter said Isak has played a lot of football recently and is in a good place physically. He also acknowledged that the striker wants to start games, meaning the manager does not intend to automatically leave him on the bench simply because of the busy schedule. Liverpool have not asked Sweden to restrict Isak
One notable detail from Potter’s comments is that Liverpool have not made a specific request for Sweden to limit Isak’s minutes during this international window.
Potter explained that managing the four games is something of a balancing act. Sweden want to field their strongest possible side because they are competing for Nations League results, but the coaching staff also have to monitor how players recover between matches.
Why Isak could feature heavily
Isak is coming off a strong start to the Liverpool season. Most recently, he scored the winning goal against Bournemouth, continuing his early-season run of form.
His involvement with Sweden could also give him valuable competitive minutes, particularly after his disrupted previous campaign. However, the four-game schedule means Potter will have to manage his workload carefully.
Sweden’s squad also includes Viktor Gyökeres, giving Potter two high-level central strikers to work with. Both could feature regularly, but Potter’s comments suggest that neither is expected to play every minute.
The main concern for Liverpool
For Liverpool, the obvious issue is workload. Isak could potentially start four matches within nine days, even if he is substituted during some of them.
Liverpool’s next major Premier League fixture after the international break is against Manchester City, making Isak’s fitness particularly important to the club.
In short: Potter has not ruled out Isak starting all four Sweden games. Instead, he plans to manage his minutes, with Isak potentially starting each match but being substituted rather than playing the full 90 minutes every time.
