Liverpool have been encouraged to put emotions to one side and consider an unexpected move to re-sign Trent Alexander-Arnold just one year after his departure to Real Madrid.
The idea remains highly divisive given the circumstances surrounding his exit and the backlash from sections of the Liverpool support, but some believe the footballing case for a reunion is becoming increasingly convincing.

With Conor Bradley still facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury, Liverpool are short of options at right-back. Meanwhile, Jeremie Frimpong has often appeared more effective in an advanced attacking role than in defence.
Although the Reds have strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Muñoz, neither signing directly addresses the lack of a natural right-back.

The new additions have boosted Liverpool’s defensive depth and attacking options, but the team is still missing a proven playmaker from the right side of defence.
Pundit backs surprise Alexander-Arnold reunion
Speaking on talkSPORT’s Transfer Insiders, Angelina Kelly suggested Liverpool should at least assess whether bringing Alexander-Arnold back is realistic instead of allowing past emotions to dictate their decision.
Kelly admitted she understands why many fans felt let down by the defender’s exit.
“I know what it’s like for a player to, in your opinion, betray the club – especially one of your own, especially being a Liverpudlian. I get it,” she said.

“When Real Madrid come calling, it is hard to say no – we have to be honest with that – and he’s made the move and it hasn’t really worked out. And you look at Liverpool and you think, do they need a new right-back? Frimpong didn’t look great last season – I think he’s probably better further forward – Bradley is injured. Maybe Liverpool should cut their losses and at least explore the Trent situation.”
Alexander-Arnold endured a difficult debut campaign in Spain, starting only 14 league games. His place in the team has become even less certain following Real Madrid’s signing of Denzel Dumfries, raising the possibility of reduced playing time or even an early departure.
Could Liverpool make the move?
Liverpool’s need at right-back is becoming increasingly obvious with Bradley still some way from returning, while Frimpong’s attacking qualities do not fully replace Alexander-Arnold’s passing range and creativity.
A return would offer clear footballing benefits. Alexander-Arnold already understands the demands of Liverpool, the Premier League and Anfield, meaning he would require little time to settle. His ability to unlock deep defences could also provide another dimension to the Reds’ attack.
However, significant obstacles remain. Real Madrid would likely demand a substantial transfer fee, while many Liverpool supporters are still unhappy about the way the academy graduate left the club.
The arrival of Dumfries could give Liverpool some leverage if Madrid become more willing to negotiate, although interest from other clubs could quickly drive up competition.
For now, Liverpool may simply be wise to assess the situation. If a deal became financially reasonable and Alexander-Arnold was committed to rebuilding his relationship with the club, a sensational return could prove beneficial for all parties.
