PREMIER LEAGUE BAN LEAVES CRYSTAL PALACE FACING MAJOR BLOW AFTER TOTTENHAM WIN

Crystal Palace have suffered a significant setback following their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta facing a three-match suspension after his controversial red card.

The French forward was sent off in the 13th minute of Saturday’s encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a dangerous challenge on Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.

Referee Michael Oliver initially showed Mateta a yellow card, but VAR intervened and advised him to review the incident. After checking the footage, the official upgraded the punishment to a straight red for serious foul play.

The dismissal left Crystal Palace playing with ten men for most of the match and made their task considerably more difficult.

Tottenham took advantage of their numerical superiority when Archie Gray headed home Mohammed Kudus’ corner in the 25th minute.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team continued to control the game before Jan Paul van Hecke scored the second goal in the 73rd minute, securing Spurs’ third consecutive Premier League victory and moving them up to eighth place.

However, the biggest concern for Palace is the impact of Mateta’s suspension.

Under Premier League disciplinary rules, a straight red card for serious foul play normally results in a three-match ban. The striker is therefore expected to miss upcoming league fixtures against Liverpool, Coventry City and Hull City, unless an appeal is successful.

His absence comes at a difficult time for manager Pierre Sage, whose team are struggling for results and have dropped into the relegation zone.

Mateta’s strength, ability to hold up the ball and threat in front of goal make him an important part of Palace’s attack. His absence could force Sage to rely more heavily on alternative options, including Eddie Nketiah.

The suspension is particularly frustrating because Mateta had recently returned from injury and started Palace’s previous two matches.

With Liverpool next on the schedule, Palace now face an even tougher challenge as they attempt to turn their season around.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will take confidence from another important victory. Spurs made their advantage count and continued their impressive run under De Zerbi.

Van de Ven will also be relieved after avoiding a serious injury from Mateta’s challenge.

Palace could appeal the red card, but overturning a dismissal for serious foul play is likely to be difficult. Unless the decision is reversed, Mateta will miss the Eagles’ next three Premier League matches.
