Trent Alexander-Arnold Faces Fresh Setback as Mourinho Leaves Him on the Bench Again
Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing growing uncertainty at Real Madrid after being left out of José Mourinho’s starting lineup for the second consecutive match.
The former Liverpool defender was an unused substitute as Real Madrid secured an impressive 4–1 victory over Sevilla. Mourinho’s decision attracted attention because both Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries were available, yet the Portuguese manager chose midfielder Federico Valverde to play at right-back.
Valverde has previously filled the position when required, but seeing him selected ahead of two natural right-backs raised questions about Alexander-Arnold’s current standing in the team.
The England international had also started on the bench during Real Madrid’s Champions League encounter with Roma. His lack of playing time has become a concern, with opportunities to establish himself in Mourinho’s preferred starting eleven remaining limited.
Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool, hoping to take the next step in his career. His excellent passing range, creativity and ability to create chances from deep made him an attractive addition to the Spanish giants.
However, injuries and competition for places have made his adaptation to life in Madrid more difficult than expected. He is now competing with Dumfries and Valverde for opportunities at right-back, while the midfield also offers limited space because of the quality available in that area.
Mourinho’s recent selection decisions suggest Alexander-Arnold still has work to do to secure a regular starting position.
Despite the situation, his future at the club remains uncertain rather than settled. How much football he receives in the coming months could influence his decision about what comes next.
For now, Alexander-Arnold will be hoping to convince Mourinho that he deserves more opportunities as Real Madrid continue their campaign.
