Alexis Mac Allister has clarified his position after his earlier comments about being disappointed that Liverpool had not offered him a new contract.
The Argentine midfielder still has two years remaining on his current Liverpool deal. Earlier this month, he revealed that he was “very sad” after learning that the club was not currently in a position to offer him an extension. He also confirmed that there had been opportunities for him to leave Liverpool during the summer.
However, Mac Allister has now stressed that no final decision has been made about his long-term future.
Speaking to ESPN Argentina, he explained that his previous comments were made emotionally and were not intended as criticism of Liverpool. He said there is still plenty of time remaining on his contract and that “a lot can happen” during those two years.
Mac Allister also made it clear that he remains happy at Anfield and would like to stay beyond his current contract if circumstances allow. He said he enjoys being at Liverpool and considers it one of the best clubs in the world.
The situation became more noticeable after Liverpool handed Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch new long-term contracts, while Mac Allister did not receive an extension. That difference contributed to his disappointment.
Despite the uncertainty, Mac Allister chose to remain at Liverpool during the summer. He had been linked with potential moves, including interest reported from major European clubs, but he said he believes Liverpool is the right place for him and that he wants to compete for trophies with the team.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has also indicated that Mac Allister remains an important player and suggested that the situation could change depending on how things develop.
The key point
Mac Allister is NOT saying he wants to leave Liverpool. His latest comments actually clarify that his future has not been decided, and he remains happy at the club. A new contract could still become possible depending on his performances and Liverpool’s decision-making over the next two years.
