Harvey Elliott’s difficult spell at Valencia has suffered another major setback after the Liverpool loanee was sent off during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Villarreal on Saturday.
The 23-year-old midfielder moved to Spain in search of regular playing time and an opportunity to rebuild his confidence after a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa last season. However, his latest appearance has added to his growing frustrations.
Valencia manager Javier Aguirre was furious with the decision to dismiss Elliott, describing the red card as absurd and ridiculous.
Valencia Throw Away Chance to Win
Valencia started the match positively at the Mestalla, taking the lead through Pepelu, who converted a first-half penalty in the 38th minute.
The home side looked to be in a strong position to secure a much-needed victory, but Villarreal fought back after the break.
Alex Freeman equalised in the second half, making the contest increasingly tense. Villarreal then suffered a major setback when Pape Gueye was sent off following a VAR review for violent conduct.
With Valencia enjoying a numerical advantage, the hosts appeared to have an excellent opportunity to claim all three points.
However, the situation changed dramatically when Elliott, who had come on as a substitute in the 70th minute, received two yellow cards in quick succession during the closing stages.
His dismissal brought the teams back to ten players apiece, disrupting Valencia’s advantage at a crucial moment.
Villarreal ultimately punished the hosts’ mistakes when Georges Mikautadze scored a stoppage-time winner in the 96th minute, securing a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
Aguirre Furious Over Elliott’s Dismissal
Speaking after the match, Aguirre did not hide his disappointment with the referee’s decision to send Elliott off.
The Valencia manager questioned what the midfielder could have said to the referee to warrant a second yellow card, pointing out that the Englishman speaks very little Spanish.
Aguirre said the decision was particularly frustrating because Valencia had been in a promising position to win the game.
He also accepted responsibility for the situation, explaining that he was the person responsible for choosing the players and deciding how his team approached matches.
The manager indicated that he had already spoken to Elliott about the incident and intended to discuss the matter further in private.
Despite his criticism of the dismissal, Aguirre acknowledged that Valencia needed to learn from the experience rather than rely on complaints about refereeing decisions.
He explained that his team had been performing reasonably well before the sending-off, but the incident forced them to change their approach.
With both sides reduced to ten players, Valencia pushed forward in search of a winner but left themselves vulnerable to counterattacks. Villarreal eventually capitalised on that situation.
Elliott’s Difficult Time at Valencia Continues
Elliott arrived at Valencia during the summer transfer window after struggling to secure consistent opportunities at Aston Villa.
His previous loan spell in England proved frustrating because Villa limited his appearances amid a contractual obligation that would have required them to make his transfer permanent after he reached a specified number of games.
The midfielder returned to Liverpool before eventually joining Valencia, hoping that a fresh environment would help him rediscover his best form.
However, his situation has not improved as expected.
Elliott has made six appearances for Valencia this season but has struggled for regular playing time. Before the Villarreal match, he had accumulated only 152 minutes of football and had yet to record a goal or an assist.
His limited involvement has raised questions about his role in the team, while reports in the Spanish media have also criticised aspects of his physical condition.
The departure of Carlos Corberan, the manager who helped convince Elliott to join Valencia, has added another complication to his loan spell.
Corberan was dismissed following the club’s disappointing start to the campaign, leaving Elliott to adapt to a new manager and a team struggling for results.
Liverpool Will Be Watching Elliott’s Situation
Elliott’s latest setback comes at a time when he desperately needs consistent football to rebuild his confidence and demonstrate his value.
The attacking midfielder previously established himself as a useful squad player at Liverpool, scoring 15 goals and providing 21 assists in 149 appearances for the club.
He remains under contract with Liverpool until June 2028, but his current loan spell has yet to provide the breakthrough he was hoping for.
Valencia, meanwhile, are experiencing a difficult campaign of their own. The club have collected just six points from their opening ten league matches and sit 19th in the La Liga standings.
Saturday’s defeat to Villarreal has increased the pressure on the team as they attempt to escape the relegation zone.
For Elliott, the immediate challenge will be to put the red card behind him, regain the manager’s trust and fight for more opportunities.
His loan move was supposed to provide a fresh start after a frustrating period at Aston Villa. Instead, the midfielder now faces another difficult chapter in his career.
With Valencia struggling and Elliott unable to establish himself as a regular starter, questions remain about whether he can turn his season around and return to Liverpool in a stronger position.
