Liverpool have reportedly been given the opportunity to secure the permanent signing of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araújo ahead of schedule, with Barcelona willing to discuss a transfer during the January 2027 window.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Barcelona have approached Liverpool about turning Araújo’s loan move into a permanent transfer earlier than originally planned.
The Spanish club are reportedly looking to raise money to strengthen their own defence, making the 27-year-old’s future an important part of their January transfer plans.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are said to be pleased with Araújo’s performances since his arrival and are open to keeping him at Anfield beyond his loan spell.
Barcelona want to raise money for new signings
Barcelona’s main motivation is reportedly financial. The Spanish giants want to generate funds to strengthen their squad, particularly by bringing in a left-sided central defender.
Selling Araújo in January would allow Barcelona to receive money earlier rather than waiting until the end of the season.
Liverpool could benefit from the situation because Barcelona are reportedly willing to discuss bringing forward the permanent transfer. However, the Spanish club may not be prepared to offer a substantial discount.
How much could Liverpool pay?
Araújo’s existing loan agreement reportedly includes an option to buy him permanently for €55 million, approximately £47 million.
Liverpool are believed to be interested in negotiating a lower price if they complete the transfer in January.
According to TEAMtalk, the Reds would consider a fee of around £40 million to £45 million a reasonable deal.
That would potentially save Liverpool between £2 million and £7 million compared with the existing £47 million valuation. However, the final amount would depend on negotiations between both clubs.
Why Liverpool want to keep Araújo
The Uruguayan defender has impressed since arriving at Anfield and has demonstrated his ability to play both centre-back and right-back.
His versatility has been particularly useful while Liverpool have dealt with defensive injuries.
At 27, Araújo also brings considerable experience from his time at Barcelona. His performances have strengthened the argument for Liverpool to consider keeping him permanently rather than allowing him to return to Spain next summer.
What has Araújo said about his future?
Although reports suggest the defender is happy at Liverpool, he has previously indicated that it is too early to make a definitive decision about his long-term future.
His agent, Edoardo Crnjar, has also urged caution, explaining that the player’s performances have been encouraging but that discussions about a permanent transfer remain premature.
This means that, despite the growing speculation, a permanent transfer has not been officially confirmed.
Could the deal happen in January?
There is a possibility. Reports indicate that Barcelona have approached Liverpool about completing the transfer earlier than originally planned.
Liverpool would reportedly prefer to negotiate a reduced fee, while Barcelona want to raise funds for their own recruitment plans.
The key question is whether both clubs can agree on a price that satisfies their financial and sporting objectives.
