Florian Wirtz Could Be Open to Bayern Munich Return as Liverpool Future Comes Under Scrutiny
Florian Wirtz’s future at Liverpool has reportedly come under fresh scrutiny following a difficult start to his second season at Anfield.
The 23-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 in a deal that could eventually reach around £116 million. However, Wirtz has yet to consistently reproduce the form and influence that made him one of the Bundesliga’s most highly rated young players.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has suggested that Wirtz could consider returning to Germany if Bayern Munich renew their interest in him.
The midfielder has reportedly found the physical intensity and pace of Premier League football challenging since his move to England. He has also produced some of his better performances for Liverpool in European competition.
Despite the speculation, Bayern are not currently understood to be preparing a bid. German journalist Christian Falk has indicated that the Bundesliga champions are monitoring Wirtz’s situation rather than actively working on a transfer.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly keen to get the best out of Wirtz and has been experimenting with his position and role in an attempt to maximise his strengths.
Liverpool are also understood to have no immediate plans to sell their record signing. A January departure would be difficult to envisage given the club’s significant investment in the midfielder and their long-term plans for him.
Wirtz’s recent performance against Bournemouth again generated discussion about his form, although he played a part in the build-up to Alexander Isak’s winning goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory.
At just 23, Wirtz still has plenty of time to adapt to English football. For now, Liverpool are expected to focus on helping him regain his best form rather than considering a mid-season transfer.
Bayern Munich’s reported interest, however, could be a storyline to monitor if Wirtz’s difficult start to life in the Premier League continues.
