Jamie Carragher apologises after praising Liverpool youngster

Jamie Carragher has publicly apologised to Sky Sports viewers after admitting he may have become carried away while praising Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet during Liverpool’s 1–0 Premier League victory over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Jacquet, 21, started alongside Virgil van Dijk and produced another impressive defensive display. According to SPORTbible, the French centre-back completed 88% of his passes, made six recoveries, two interceptions and two clearances as Liverpool kept Bournemouth from scoring.

Carragher was particularly impressed by what he saw from the youngster and said on Sky Sports:

“Am I getting carried away? I apologise to viewers at home… I’ve been really impressed.”

He then acknowledged that Jacquet is still young and will inevitably make mistakes, but added that the defender “looks the part” and “looks like a good player.”

Jacquet joined Liverpool from Rennes in a reported £60 million move and has started all five of Liverpool’s opening Premier League matches this season. His partnership with Van Dijk has been one of the notable features of Liverpool’s early-season defensive performances.

Liverpool secured the win through Alexander Isak’s second-half goal, while Jacquet again attracted attention for his defensive performance. The result also kept Liverpool unbeaten after five league matches.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola had previously spoken highly of Jacquet, saying the young defender had “all the tools” needed for the position and was ready to play from the beginning of the season.

In short: Carragher’s “apology” was not for criticising Jacquet—it was a tongue-in-cheek apology for sounding overly enthusiastic about the young defender after another strong performance.
