Liverpool Face Late Injury Scare Over Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister Ahead of Man City Clash
Liverpool have been handed a worrying late fitness scare involving midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister ahead of their crucial Premier League encounter against Manchester City at Anfield.
The two midfielders were expected to play important roles in the match, but their availability has come into question after neither player was spotted in footage showing Liverpool’s squad arriving at their team hotel on Sunday morning.
Liverpool Fans Concerned Over Midfield Duo
Footage shared by journalist Keefe Irwin sparked concerns among Liverpool supporters after Szoboszlai and Mac Allister appeared to be missing from the group of players arriving at the team hotel.
However, it remains unclear whether either midfielder is carrying an injury or whether they simply did not appear in the footage. Liverpool have not confirmed that the pair are unavailable for the game.
Szoboszlai has been a regular starter this season, featuring from the beginning in every one of Liverpool’s Premier League matches during the 2026–27 campaign. He also played in all four of Hungary’s Nations League fixtures during the international break.
Mac Allister has also been an important member of the team, starting all three of Argentina’s international friendlies during the break. He has made five starts for Liverpool across the Premier League, Champions League and EFL Cup this season.
Their possible absence would be a significant setback for Liverpool, particularly against a Manchester City side that has made an impressive start to the campaign.
Liverpool Already Dealing With Several Injuries
Liverpool are already facing selection problems ahead of Sunday’s encounter, with several players expected to miss the match.
Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo have been ruled out after suffering injuries during the international break. Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are also unavailable.
Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa and Jeremy Jacquet have offered more encouraging news, with both players having a chance of being involved in the match.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola had not announced any additional injury concerns during his pre-match press conference. Consequently, supporters will have to wait for the official team sheet to discover whether Szoboszlai and Mac Allister are available.
Who Could Replace Szoboszlai and Mac Allister?
If both midfielders are ruled out, Liverpool may need to make significant changes to their starting lineup.
Ryan Gravenberch could be called upon to take on a more prominent midfield role. However, the Dutch midfielder has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter this season, managing only two starts across all competitions.
Teenager Trey Nyoni could also be considered as a potential midfield partner for Gravenberch. A start against Manchester City would represent his first Premier League start.
Other options include Wataru Endo and James McConnell, who could come into consideration if Liverpool are forced to reshuffle their midfield.
Losing both Szoboszlai and Mac Allister would leave Liverpool without two players expected to contribute significantly to their midfield performance against City.
Liverpool Await Final Fitness Update
Liverpool supporters will be hoping the concerns prove to be nothing more than a false alarm. Both players are important to the team’s plans, and their availability could have a considerable influence on the manager’s selection.
A definitive answer is expected when the official starting lineups are announced approximately 75 minutes before kick-off. Iraola is also expected to address any unexpected absences before or after the match.
The big question remains whether Szoboszlai and Mac Allister will be fit to face Manchester City or whether Liverpool will be forced to make last-minute changes to their midfield.
