Tottenham CEO Publicly Backs De Zerbi Despite Difficult Start
Tottenham Hotspur have publicly thrown their support behind manager Roberto De Zerbi despite the club’s disappointing beginning to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Spurs currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after taking just two points from their opening five matches. The poor run has naturally increased scrutiny on De Zerbi, particularly after the club invested heavily in rebuilding the squad during the summer.
Tottenham spent more than £380 million on new players, bringing in 10 additions as part of a major squad overhaul. Among the new arrivals were Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savinho, while several experienced players left the club.
Despite the results, Tottenham CEO Vinai Venkatesham has publicly expressed his confidence in De Zerbi and the club’s wider project.
According to GOAL, Venkatesham addressed the situation during Tottenham’s first Fan Advisory Board meeting of the season. He acknowledged supporters’ frustration but explained that the club had undergone significant changes both on and off the pitch and that such a transformation would require time.
Venkatesham also highlighted some positive aspects of Tottenham’s performances since their opening-day defeat to Brentford, although the team have struggled to turn promising periods of play into victories.
There is an argument for giving the new-look Tottenham side time to develop. Bringing in 10 new players while changing major parts of the squad was always likely to require an adjustment period.
However, the size of the club’s financial investment means expectations remain high. The Independent reports that Tottenham also generated around £150 million from player sales, while the Lewis family recently provided another £120 million in funding.
This means the situation goes beyond simply giving De Zerbi time to settle. Tottenham have made a significant commitment to his plans and will want to see evidence of progress.
The public backing from Venkatesham should ease some of the immediate speculation surrounding De Zerbi’s position. However, results remain important, and the club cannot afford to spend too much time near the bottom of the Premier League table.
Spurs have finished 17th in each of the previous two seasons, making an improvement in their league position a major priority.
For now, the message from Tottenham’s leadership appears clear: the club continues to believe in De Zerbi and the rebuilding process, but the team’s performances must begin translating into points sooner rather than later.
