UNAI EMERY REACTS TO TOTTENHAM’S 3-2 DEFEAT AS ASTON VILLA BOSS EXPLAINS HOW HIS SIDE WAITED FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT TO STRIKE

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised his team’s patience, defensive resilience and clinical finishing after Villa defeated Tottenham 3–2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Villa were put under pressure early in the match, but Emery’s players remained organised rather than constantly committing numbers forward. The manager explained that the plan was to defend strongly and wait for the right opportunities to attack.

“We defended with resilience. We waited for our moment to threaten them, and we were clinical.”

Villa eventually took the lead in first-half stoppage time. Tottenham were temporarily down to 10 men while Micky van de Ven received treatment for a facial injury, and Johan Manzambi reacted quickest inside the box to give Villa a 1–0 lead.

Tottenham attempted to respond after the break and thought they had pulled one back through Mohammed Kudus, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up. Villa then took control of the game.

In the 67th minute, Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa’s advantage. The striker connected with a long ball from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and produced a composed finish to make it 2–0. Emery was particularly pleased with Jackson’s performance, saying the forward is increasingly understanding how Villa can exploit his positioning and qualities.

Villa made it 3–0 in the 79th minute when Emiliano Buendía unleashed a spectacular strike from around 22 yards into the top corner. At that point, many Tottenham supporters began leaving the stadium.

Spurs finally found a response late in the game. Conor Gallagher scored Tottenham’s first Premier League goal of the season before Jan Paul van Hecke added another in stoppage time. However, the comeback came too late and Villa held on for their first league victory of the campaign.

The result has intensified the pressure on Tottenham. Spurs remain without a league victory after five matches and have only two points, leaving them in the relegation zone. Villa, meanwhile, moved onto four points with their first win.

Emery’s post-match assessment therefore centred on patience, organisation and taking chances when they appeared rather than dominating possession throughout the match. His comments also highlighted how Villa were able to exploit openings when Tottenham’s defensive structure broke down.
