Liverpool suffered another significant setback ahead of their crucial Premier League showdown against Manchester City after Dominik Szoboszlai was left out of the matchday squad.
The Hungarian midfielder’s absence came as a surprise to many Liverpool supporters, especially after he featured heavily for his country during the international break.
SZOBOSZLAI RULED OUT THROUGH INJURY
Reports confirmed that Szoboszlai was struggling with a hamstring injury. Despite efforts to maintain his fitness, the midfielder was not ready to feature against Pep Guardiola’s former title rivals, Manchester City.
His absence represents another headache for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who was already dealing with several important injury problems.
LIVERPOOL’S INJURY PROBLEMS DEEPEN
Liverpool were also without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, who were recovering from injuries sustained during international duty. Hugo Ekitike was another attacking absentee.
With several important players unavailable, Liverpool were forced to reshuffle their starting lineup.
Young forward Lewis Koumas was handed an opportunity to lead the attack, while Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were expected to shoulder additional responsibility.
A HUGE MISS FOR LIVERPOOL
Szoboszlai has become an important figure in Liverpool’s midfield because of his energy, work rate and ability to contribute in both attack and defence.
His absence against Manchester City was therefore a major concern for Liverpool supporters, particularly given the quality of their opponents.
Liverpool needed their remaining players to step up in a difficult encounter against a Manchester City side that had started the season strongly.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MATCH?
Manchester City eventually secured a convincing 3–0 victory at Anfield.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring before Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage. Rayan Cherki then added a third goal to complete the victory.
Liverpool’s afternoon became even more difficult after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the second half.
The defeat was a disappointing result for Liverpool, who will now be hoping to recover their injured players as quickly as possible.
