Tottenham Hotspur have already strengthened their defence with three experienced signings this summer, but their transfer business is far from over. Reports suggest Spurs are now pushing ahead with two major midfield deals while also making the addition of two new wingers a key priority before the window closes.
Their search for attacking reinforcements has now led them to Spain, with Real Madrid youngster Franco Mastantuono emerging as a potential target.
According to Sport, via Sport Witness, Tottenham are among the clubs interested in signing the highly-rated Argentine on loan after Real Madrid decided he is not part of Jose Mourinho’s plans for the upcoming season. The Spanish giants are prepared to let the 18-year-old leave temporarily to gain valuable first-team experience.
However, Spurs are not alone in the race. Villarreal, FC Porto, Sporting CP, Benfica, Inter Milan, Juventus, Stade Rennais and former club River Plate have all reportedly made enquiries about the talented winger.
Despite River Plate’s interest, a return to Argentina is considered highly unlikely, with Mastantuono determined to continue his development in European football. Villarreal are currently viewed as the favourites to secure his signature, having shown a willingness to meet Real Madrid’s loan conditions.
The report also states that Madrid want guarantees over the youngster’s playing time and have no intention of including a purchase option in any loan agreement. In addition, the La Liga club would prefer to send Mastantuono to a team competing in next season’s Champions League, a factor that could make Tottenham’s pursuit significantly more difficult.
