Tottenham Hotspur have received a significant lift in their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with fresh reports from Sky Sports Italy suggesting the Italian international is open to making the move to North London.
Tonali has emerged as one of Tottenham’s primary transfer targets this summer, with new head coach Roberto De Zerbi identifying his fellow Italian as the ideal player to strengthen the heart of midfield. Despite attracting interest from several Premier League giants, including Arsenal and Manchester United, Spurs now appear to have taken a major step forward in the race for his signature.
After narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of last season, Tottenham are determined to rebuild under De Zerbi and return to competing near the top of the table. Bringing in a player of Tonali’s quality would represent a huge statement of intent as the club aims to challenge for a top-four finish.
According to the report, Tonali has now given Tottenham the green light over a potential transfer, with negotiations between the two clubs continuing. Newcastle, however, remain reluctant to part ways with one of their most influential players. Spurs have already seen a £75 million bid rejected and even returned with an improved approach, but the Magpies are standing firm on their £100 million valuation.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer of 2023 for around £55 million and has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. The 26-year-old enjoyed another impressive campaign last season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. His performances have earned widespread praise, with Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson previously describing him as a “superstar player.”
To convince Tonali to join, Tottenham are reportedly prepared to offer him a lucrative contract worth around £275,000 per week. If completed, the deal would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history, comfortably surpassing the £200,000-per-week mark.
Despite the player’s willingness to make the switch, Newcastle are expected to make negotiations extremely difficult. The club recently dealt with a prolonged transfer battle involving Alexander Isak before eventually selling the Swedish striker to Liverpool for a British-record £125 million after the player pushed for an exit.
Tottenham will hope to avoid a similarly drawn-out saga with Tonali. While De Zerbi views the Italian midfielder as a dream signing capable of transforming his squad, Spurs are also aware that spending the entire transfer window chasing one player could disrupt their wider recruitment plans ahead of a crucial new season.
