Tottenham Hotspur are heading into the new season with renewed optimism under Roberto De Zerbi, and excitement is growing behind the scenes over one of the club’s brightest young talents. According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, club insiders have been especially impressed by summer signing Mateus Fernandes during pre-season.
After narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2025–26 Premier League campaign, Spurs have undergone a dramatic transformation. The appointment of De Zerbi has injected fresh belief into the club, while Tottenham’s ambitious recruitment has further lifted expectations.
The Lilywhites have strengthened key areas of the squad, particularly in defence, where Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke, Kevin Danso and Marcos Senesi are expected to battle for starting places. Midfield has also been upgraded with the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while the club continues its search for attacking reinforcements.
Among the new faces, Fernandes has arguably made the biggest impression so far. The 22-year-old announced himself with a spectacular goal in Tottenham’s pre-season victory over MK Dons before featuring again in the 2-0 win over Auckland in New Zealand.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold revealed that excitement surrounding Fernandes extends well beyond his performances on the pitch. He explained that those inside the club have been blown away by the Portuguese midfielder’s quality, believing he possesses the potential to develop into one of the finest midfielders in world football.
Gold compared Fernandes’ all-round ability to that of Archie Gray, while suggesting the former has an even higher ceiling. According to the journalist, Tottenham were already confident they had signed a top player based on his statistics, but working with him daily has only strengthened that belief.
Meanwhile, Tottenham remain active in the transfer market. Although their immediate priority is to complete a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho, reports indicate Spurs are also planning a move for Bournemouth striker Eli Junior Kroupi.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout Premier League campaign last season, scoring 13 goals in 33 appearances to help Bournemouth secure European football for the first time in the club’s history. However, Tottenham’s pursuit could become more complicated after Fabrizio Romano reported that Barcelona have opened talks over a potential move for the highly rated French forward.
