Three months after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon, Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has been urged not to rush his recovery by a leading foot and ankle specialist.
The French forward sustained the serious injury during Liverpool’s 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in April. Initial estimates suggested he would be sidelined for at least nine months, with later reports indicating he is aiming to return to competitive action by the end of December after enduring a difficult rehabilitation.
Speaking to The Athletic, renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew J. Elliott, who has performed more than 350 Achilles tendon repair surgeries, explained that Ekitike is now entering an important stage of his recovery. He said the focus should be on restoring movement, rebuilding strength through isometric exercises, preserving muscle with Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy, and gradually progressing to walking and light jogging on an anti-gravity treadmill.
Dr. Elliott stressed that Achilles rehabilitation often takes longer than many expect and warned that returning too soon could increase the risk of permanent weakness or even another rupture. He emphasized the importance of trusting Liverpool’s medical team, following the rehabilitation plan carefully, and focusing on steady progress rather than rushing back onto the pitch.
Although Ekitike will be eager to return, the medical advice highlights why Liverpool must remain patient. Several players, including Eberechi Eze, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Thomas Lemar, required longer recoveries than initially expected after similar injuries.
Even once Ekitike is medically cleared to play, supporters should expect him to need time to regain his sharpness and confidence after such a significant setback. His recovery remains a gradual process, but with Liverpool’s medical staff overseeing his rehabilitation, there is optimism that he will continue making steady progress.
Whenever Ekitike finally returns, he is certain to receive a warm welcome from the Anfield faithful.
