Lucas Bergvall Criticised Despite Completing Full Match In Sweden’s Win Over Poland
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall endured a mixed night for Sweden despite his country securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League.
The 20-year-old was handed another start by Sweden manager Graham Potter and operated in central midfield alongside Brighton’s Yasin Ayari. Bergvall was trusted to remain on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes as Sweden claimed another important result.
However, his individual display attracted criticism because of his involvement in Poland’s goal.
Sweden made a strong start and took the lead after Benjamin Nygren found the net inside the opening eight minutes. The hosts appeared to be in control, but Poland managed to level the score shortly before half-time.
Poland’s equaliser came in the 43rd minute through Sebastian Szymański. Bergvall lost possession during the build-up, allowing Poland to take advantage and find the breakthrough.
The mistake put the spotlight on the Tottenham youngster, particularly because it directly contributed to Poland getting back into the match. Despite the error, Potter continued to trust Bergvall and kept him on the field for the remainder of the game.
Sweden responded strongly after the break. Ayari restored their lead in the 63rd minute before Viktor Gyökeres added another goal nine minutes later to complete a 3-1 victory.
Interestingly, Bergvall was the only player from Sweden’s starting midfield to play the entire match. Ayari was eventually replaced, while Potter also made changes to his attacking players.
Although Sweden comfortably secured the win, attention after the final whistle remained focused on Bergvall’s mistake. Reports from Sweden highlighted criticism of the midfielder’s use of possession, with his involvement in Poland’s goal becoming one of the main talking points surrounding his performance.
Nevertheless, the match also represents another important learning experience for Bergvall. Despite already gaining considerable senior experience with both Tottenham and Sweden, he remains just 20 years old and is still developing.
Bergvall has also recently committed his future to Tottenham by signing a new long-term contract, underlining the club’s confidence in his ability and potential.
Since arriving at Spurs from Djurgården, the midfielder has gradually taken on a bigger role and continues to be regarded as an important part of the club’s plans.
He will now return to Tottenham having completed another full international match and gained further experience at senior level. Despite the criticism surrounding his mistake, the 90 minutes will provide another opportunity for the young midfielder to learn and improve as he continues his development in North London.
