Gerrard’s power, Kante’s energy: Iraola pushing Liverpool to land £83m midfield superstar

Liverpool are reportedly preparing an ambitious £83million move for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

The Reds are expected to reinforce their midfield, with uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister’s future and Ryan Gravenberch also attracting interest from elsewhere.

According to reports in Spain, Valverde has emerged as Liverpool’s leading target for the central midfield position, with Andoni Iraola’s side considering a massive £83m bid to bring the Uruguayan international to Anfield.

The 28-year-old is viewed as a possible replacement for Mac Allister, who has around 18 months remaining on his current contract. Despite being an important figure for Liverpool this season, concerns over his long-term future have reportedly encouraged the club to explore alternatives.

Valverde would represent a major addition to Liverpool’s midfield. Having joined Real Madrid from Penarol a decade ago, the midfielder has developed into one of the Spanish giants’ most important players, making more than 350 appearances for the club.

His trophy collection speaks for itself. Valverde has won three La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies and one Copa del Rey during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

His experience at the highest level, winning mentality and versatility could make him an outstanding signing for Liverpool.

Why Valverde could be exactly what Liverpool need

Despite the emergence of young talents such as Trey Nyoni, Liverpool still appear short of quality and depth in central midfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch remain important options, while Wataru Endo is another senior midfielder. However, the Japanese international has yet to feature this season.

Liverpool’s recent 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Anfield exposed some of their midfield weaknesses, with the visitors taking control of the middle of the pitch. A player with Valverde’s energy, physicality and technical ability could have made a significant difference.

The Real Madrid star combines excellent passing ability with powerful ball-carrying, impressive stamina and a relentless work rate. He is equally effective going forward and contributing defensively.

Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso even compared him to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in 2025, highlighting his extraordinary physical qualities and ability to operate in different positions.

Valverde’s relentless pressing and energy have also drawn comparisons with former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Those qualities are precisely what Liverpool could benefit from at the moment. While Nyoni has shown plenty of promise, Valverde offers a level of technical quality and experience that the teenager is still developing.

Mac Allister, meanwhile, has occasionally struggled with his defensive contributions away from the ball, an area where Valverde could provide a significant improvement.

The Uruguayan is also a genuine goal threat, having scored 20 goals across the previous two seasons. His ability to contribute in attack while maintaining his defensive responsibilities makes him one of the most complete midfielders in European football.

Another major advantage is his versatility. Valverde has recently featured at right-back for Real Madrid, meaning he could provide additional cover in defence whenever required.

Liverpool may need to spend considerably more than £83m to secure his signature, but his quality, experience and versatility could make him a worthwhile investment.
