Uruguayan journalist Martín Charquero claimed that Darwin Núñez was set for a Liverpool return, stating that an official announcement was being delayed because the striker wanted to remain focused on international duty with Uruguay.
However, these claims were firmly rejected by both The Athletic journalist James Pearce and Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano. Pearce reported that although rumours from South America linked Núñez with a comeback after a spell at Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, Liverpool’s senior sources insist there is no truth to the speculation.
Romano also dismissed the reports, saying his information from people close to Núñez confirms that nothing is happening between the player and Liverpool, and that there are no ongoing talks regarding a return.
Despite the denials, speculation continues in some circles, with suggestions that Núñez may be looking to leave Al Hilal this summer, where he reportedly earns around £400,000 per week.
Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has also weighed in on the debate in an interview with the Liverpool Echo. He described a potential return as a short-term solution rather than a long-term plan, and questioned whether it would be the right move for the club. With Hugo Ekitike reportedly sidelined until late 2026 or early 2027, some fans have floated Núñez as a possible backup option, but Heskey dismissed the idea, saying he cannot see it happening and believes it would be a poor decision for Liverpool.
