Jeremy Jacquet misses France vs Belgium after hamstring issue
Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet has been ruled out of France’s Nations League meeting with Belgium after experiencing a problem with his left hamstring.
The 21-year-old had been expected to make his third consecutive start for France during the international break after making an impressive senior debut against Belgium last week. He also started against Italy and received strong praise for his performance.
However, Jacquet was left out of the matchday squad for Monday’s rematch with Belgium. The French Football Federation described the issue as a “strain/tension in his left hamstring” and indicated that leaving him out was a precautionary decision.
Jacquet’s absence is a concern for Liverpool because he has quickly become an important part of Andoni Iraola’s defence since joining the club from Rennes. He has started six of the seven matches he has played for Liverpool this season.
During his first international appearances, Jacquet impressed with his composure, strength in duels and ability to defend aggressively. Against Italy, France boss Zinedine Zidane was particularly pleased with him, repeatedly praising his performance and bravery in defensive situations.
With Jacquet unavailable, Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was handed his France debut against Belgium. Yoro partnered Maxence Lacroix at centre-back.
The immediate concern for Liverpool is whether Jacquet will recover in time for the Reds’ upcoming Premier League fixture against Manchester City. No definite recovery timeframe has yet been provided, and further medical checks are expected when he returns to Liverpool.
The positive news is that the issue is currently being treated as a precaution rather than a confirmed long-term injury. Nevertheless, hamstring problems can be unpredictable, so Liverpool will be hoping further tests show there is no significant damage.
