Improving Liverpool’s defensive structure is expected to be one of Andoni Iraola’s top priorities after taking over from Arne Slot at Anfield.
The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League last season, earning a Champions League place thanks to the competition’s expanded format. However, their defensive record was a major concern, conceding 53 goals in 38 league matches.
That total was 26 more than Arsenal and 18 more than Manchester City, underlining just how far Liverpool trailed the league’s best defensive sides. While the backline deserves some responsibility, the midfield also struggled to provide enough protection, often lacking a specialist defensive midfielder to shield the defence.
Ryan Gravenberch impressed at times, but the Dutch international is naturally more suited to a box-to-box role than operating as a traditional No. 6.
Liverpool in talks over Eduardo Camavinga
Gravenberch contributed five goals and three assists in the Premier League last season, and his attacking qualities could be maximised if Liverpool signed a natural holding midfielder.
Reports from Spain claim the Reds are among several clubs interested in signing Eduardo Camavinga from Real Madrid this summer. Liverpool are said to have already held discussions with the Spanish giants over a potential move for the France international.
Manchester United, Juventus and Chelsea have also reportedly made contact, meaning competition for the 23-year-old is expected to be fierce. Real Madrid are believed to be willing to consider offers of around £52 million or more.
Why Camavinga could be an upgrade
Iraola could strengthen Liverpool’s defensive midfield by bringing in Camavinga, whose natural defensive instincts set him apart from Gravenberch.
While Gravenberch thrives with the ball at his feet and progressing play through midfield, Camavinga excels at breaking up opposition attacks, winning duels and protecting the back four.

Although Camavinga started only 16 of his 29 La Liga appearances due to fierce competition at Real Madrid, his per-90 statistics were outstanding.
His ability to make more tackles, recover possession more frequently and win a higher percentage of duels suggests he could significantly improve Liverpool’s defensive stability. He also loses possession less often, making him a dependable option in front of the defence.
Praised by football writer Harvey Diamonds as “one of the best No. 6s in world football,” Camavinga possesses the defensive awareness and composure needed to strengthen Liverpool’s midfield while allowing Gravenberch to play further forward.
Despite being just 23, the French international already boasts vast experience, having made 223 appearances for Real Madrid, including 56 Champions League matches, while winning two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.
If Liverpool can complete a deal, Camavinga could prove to be the ideal addition to Iraola’s squad, offering a specialist defensive midfield presence and helping the Reds build a far stronger defensive foundation for the new Premier League season.
