Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States got off to a worrying start as Joe Gomez was forced off with an injury just minutes into the Reds’ opening friendly against Sunderland.

The experienced defender, who captained the side in Nashville and partnered youngster Mor Talla Ndiaye in central defence, saw his evening come to an abrupt end after going down in the eighth minute.

Despite getting back to his feet, Gomez headed straight down the tunnel as head coach Andoni Iraola opted not to take any risks, replacing him with Ifeanyi Ndukwe. Kostas Tsimikas then took over the captaincy.

The injury immediately sparked concern among Liverpool supporters, with many pointing out that the club’s need to strengthen at centre-back has become even more urgent.
Iraola had already made it clear during his unveiling that he wants more additions before the transfer window closes, and Gomez’s latest setback is only likely to reinforce that message to FSG.
Liverpool’s defensive concerns had already grown before kick-off after new signing Jeremy Jacquet was ruled out with a minor injury, although he is expected to return to training later during the U.S. tour.
The Reds are also still waiting for Virgil van Dijk to rejoin the squad following his World Cup commitments with the Netherlands, while Giovanni Leoni continues his recovery from an ACL injury.
With Gomez forced off so early, Liverpool were left relying on youngsters Ndiaye and Ndukwe at the heart of defence, underlining the lack of experienced options available to Iraola.
The club will be hoping Gomez’s injury proves to be only a minor setback, but the incident has further highlighted the urgent need for defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
