Kylian Mbappé Admits He Was Once Very Close to Joining Liverpool
Kylian Mbappé has revealed that Liverpool were seriously considered as his next destination during his breakthrough years at Monaco, with his mother particularly keen on seeing him move to Anfield.
Speaking to The Athletic, the Real Madrid forward recalled having to make an important decision while starring for Monaco.
“I was close to joining Liverpool,” Mbappé explained.
He revealed that his mother had a strong preference for Liverpool because she was a big admirer of then-manager Jürgen Klopp.
“My mum was a big fan of Jürgen Klopp, and Liverpool was her favourite destination for me,” Mbappé said.
Despite her preference, Mbappé ultimately decided against moving to England. The young Frenchman wanted to remain close to home and chose Paris Saint-Germain instead.
“She wanted me to go there, but I wanted to play in my city, Paris,” he added.
Mbappé had enjoyed a breakthrough 2016/17 campaign with Monaco, helping the club win the Ligue 1 title before completing his move to PSG in 2017.
The revelation provides a fresh look at how close Liverpool may have come to signing one of the world’s biggest football stars before his career took him to Paris and, eventually, Real Madrid.
