Liverpool are reportedly making plans for the future as uncertainty continues to surround Virgil van Dijk’s long-term future at Anfield.
The 35-year-old remains an important figure for the Reds and continues to play a major role in the team. However, Liverpool are also looking ahead by developing a younger generation of centre-backs who could eventually succeed their captain.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, no final decision has been made over whether Van Dijk will receive another contract. While Liverpool are unlikely to rush the experienced defender out because of his importance to the squad, preparations for his eventual departure are already underway.
Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are viewed as two of the club’s promising defensive options. Liverpool have invested in both young defenders with the expectation that they can develop into key players and eventually compete for the position currently occupied by Van Dijk.
For now, Van Dijk remains a vital part of Liverpool’s plans, but the pressure will gradually fall on Jacquet, Leoni and the other young defenders to prove they are ready to take over when the Dutchman eventually moves on.
The next few seasons could therefore be crucial in determining whether Liverpool’s next defensive leaders are already at the club. (CaughtOffside)
