Richarlison Could Seek Free Transfer Back to Brazil After Tottenham Exile
Richarlison is reportedly exploring legal action to end his Tottenham Hotspur contract and make a free move back to Brazil, with Vasco da Gama emerging as his preferred destination.
The 29-year-old forward is believed to be keen on returning to his boyhood club and joining Pedro Emanuel’s team. According to reports from Globo Esporte, Richarlison’s representatives are examining legal options that could allow him to leave Spurs without a transfer fee.
The situation has developed after Tottenham decided not to include the Brazilian in their first-team plans and instead moved him down to the Under-21 squad. His legal representatives are now questioning whether the decision to remove him from the senior squad was valid and are reportedly seeking to have his entire Tottenham contract cancelled.
Although the Brazilian transfer window is due to close on Friday, the report suggests that the deadline may not prevent a potential move. Because the request to terminate Richarlison’s contract has already been submitted, he could potentially complete a move to Vasco even after the transfer deadline.
A loan switch had previously been considered, but FIFA regulations prevented that option from going ahead. Tottenham are also reportedly looking for around £19.33 million for Richarlison, a figure Vasco da Gama cannot afford.
Richarlison joined Tottenham from Everton in July 2022 in a deal worth around £60 million. Everton were under financial pressure because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which contributed to the decision to sell the Brazil international.
The forward has earned 54 caps for Brazil and scored 20 international goals. However, his future at Tottenham now appears increasingly uncertain, with a free transfer to Brazil potentially becoming an option if his legal attempt to terminate his contract succeeds.
There is also a recent precedent for such a situation. Renan Lodi previously left Al-Hilal after terminating his contract with the Saudi club and later returned to Brazilian football by signing for Atletico Mineiro.
Richarlison could now be hoping for a similar outcome as he looks for a way out of Tottenham and a return to his homeland.
