Tottenham Injury Update: Latest News on Maddison, Kulusevski and Others
Tottenham Hotspur have picked up their first Premier League point of the season, but Roberto De Zerbi still has several concerns to deal with, particularly in attack.
Spurs have failed to win or score in their opening three league matches. Their goalless draw against Nottingham Forest ended consecutive defeats to Brentford and Newcastle, but the performance once again highlighted Tottenham’s lack of creativity and attacking options.
Savio and Destiny Udogie were both carefully managed during the Forest match as they continue their respective comebacks. Both players were substituted shortly after the hour mark, but importantly, neither suffered a fresh injury.
Kulusevski suffers a minor setback
There has been some encouraging news regarding Dejan Kulusevski, although his comeback has suffered a small interruption.
The Swedish midfielder has returned to training after spending almost 18 months on the sidelines because of a serious patella injury. However, Tottenham are taking no chances with his recovery.
De Zerbi confirmed that Kulusevski trained with the team at the start of the week but subsequently experienced a minor issue that prevented him from training for the next couple of days.
Despite the temporary setback, the Tottenham manager remains confident about the midfielder’s rehabilitation and believes he is progressing well.
De Zerbi is also eager to have Kulusevski back in his squad, but Tottenham have not yet confirmed a specific date for his return to competitive football.
Simons and Odobert still facing lengthy absences
Xavi Simons is expected to remain unavailable until 2027 after suffering an ACL injury against Wolves in April last season.
His absence has been particularly significant for Tottenham because the team has struggled to create chances and provide enough attacking creativity during the early stages of the campaign.
Simons’ ability to open up defences and produce opportunities has been missed, meaning De Zerbi will have to rely on other options for several more months.
Wilson Odobert is also recovering from an ACL injury suffered last season. However, his rehabilitation is reportedly progressing better than Simons’, giving Tottenham hope that he could return before the end of 2026.
Spurs urgently need attacking options
Tottenham’s biggest problem is becoming increasingly obvious: they need to find a way to score.
The point against Nottingham Forest stopped their losing run, but Spurs are still without a Premier League goal after three matches. The shortage of attacking players has made De Zerbi’s task even more difficult.
The eventual returns of Kulusevski and Odobert could provide Tottenham with a major boost, but the club will need to remain patient and ensure neither player is rushed back before they are completely ready.
For now, Tottenham must find alternative solutions while their injured attacking players continue their rehabilitation.
