Liverpool make Trent Alexander-Arnold decision as right-back struggles at Real Madrid

The 28-year-old has found regular playing time difficult to come by under José Mourinho this season and appears to have fallen behind Federico Valverde and summer recruit Denzel Dumfries in the battle for the right-back position.

His reduced role has sparked rumours of a potential return to Merseyside, although Liverpool are reportedly considering alternative options.

Liverpool Not Prioritising Alexander-Arnold

According to Football Insider, Liverpool do not currently consider Alexander-Arnold a serious transfer target.

The England international has started just three of Real Madrid’s nine La Liga matches this season. He was also left unused in their previous three domestic and European fixtures before the weekend’s action.

Statistics published by Real Madrid further highlight his limited involvement. Alexander-Arnold has accumulated only 345 minutes across seven appearances in all competitions, registering a single assist.

Liverpool’s position is particularly interesting given their ongoing concerns at right-back. Ronald Araujo has impressed during his loan spell, while Jeremie Frimpong has yet to fully establish himself. Conor Bradley’s recurring injury problems have also affected his availability.

Recent reports have indicated that Real Madrid could consider offers for Alexander-Arnold if the right proposal arrives. However, Liverpool are reportedly reluctant to pursue a reunion with their former academy graduate.

Liverpool Refuse to Let Sentiment Dictate Their Decision

There is an undeniable emotional appeal to the possibility of Alexander-Arnold returning to Anfield.

Having progressed through Liverpool’s academy, the defender knows the club inside out and remains renowned for his exceptional passing range and creativity from the right flank. Nevertheless, a potential reunion presents several practical challenges.

Liverpool are weighing up whether to make Araujo’s loan move permanent for approximately £46 million, while Frimpong and Bradley remain available as existing options.

Re-signing Alexander-Arnold would involve substantial wages and could prove controversial among supporters, particularly given the disappointment surrounding his departure for Madrid.

His suitability for Liverpool’s current system is another consideration. Although his technical ability and creativity remain outstanding, Andoni Iraola demands considerable defensive discipline, intensity and athleticism from his full-backs.

At 28, Alexander-Arnold would also represent a different type of investment from the younger players Liverpool typically target.

For now, Liverpool appear content to explore alternative right-back options rather than pursue an emotional reunion, leaving Alexander-Arnold to fight for his place at Real Madrid.
