ARYNA SABALENKA FIRES BACK AT REPORTER AFTER CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION
Aryna Sabalenka found herself in a tense exchange with a reporter following her dominant second-round victory at the US Open.
The world No. 1 had just defeated Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1, extending her winning streak at the tournament to 15 matches. But the biggest moment of the night came during her post-match press conference.
A journalist asked whether Sabalenka’s mood had changed now that the tournament had started, referring to the previous week as being filled with “parties and fun.”
The question immediately appeared to frustrate the Belarusian star.
Sabalenka shook her head and questioned why her social-media posts had been interpreted as evidence that she had been partying rather than training. She explained that sharing activities with sponsors and brands did not mean she had neglected her preparation for the tournament.
When the reporter attempted to clarify that he had not actually suggested she was partying, Sabalenka quickly pointed out that his original wording had clearly implied exactly that.
She then moved on to the next question, but not before delivering one final message to the media: think carefully before making such comments.
The confrontation comes as Sabalenka attempts to make history in New York. After winning the previous two US Open titles, she is chasing a third consecutive championship—something that would put her among the greatest players ever to accomplish the feat.
Her response also highlights the intense scrutiny she faces both on and off the court, particularly because she regularly shares parts of her life and commercial activities on social media.
For Sabalenka, however, appearing relaxed away from competition does not mean she is taking tennis less seriously. She remains focused on defending her title and continuing her remarkable run in New York.
