Steven Gerrard Issues ‘Risk’ Warning Over Tottenham’s Marbella Training Camp Ahead of Coventry Clash

Steven Gerrard has warned Tottenham Hotspur to be cautious about their Marbella training camp, describing the trip as a potential risk at a crucial point in their season.

The purpose of the trip is to help Roberto De Zerbi’s squad strengthen their relationships, improve team spirit and spend more time together away from the pressure of competitive football.

However, speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard expressed concerns about the location, drawing on his own experiences of mid-season training camps during his playing and managerial career.

The former Liverpool captain recalled a controversial trip to the Algarve in 2007, when Rafa Benitez took his players away ahead of their Champions League clash with Barcelona.

The trip became infamous following an alleged altercation involving Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise after a karaoke night. Riise later claimed in his autobiography that Bellamy had attacked him with a golf club, leaving bruises on his legs.

Despite the controversy, both players scored in Liverpool’s memorable 2-1 victory over Barcelona. Bellamy famously celebrated his goal with a golf-swinging gesture, but the incident attracted significant media attention.

Reflecting on Tottenham’s decision to travel to Marbella, Gerrard admitted that although such camps can benefit a team, they also come with potential dangers.

“You’re speaking to the wrong person,” Gerrard said, explaining that he had experienced both the advantages and disadvantages of team bonding trips.

He also referenced his time managing Rangers, revealing that a trip to Dubai had negatively affected the team one year, although a subsequent visit helped them improve their performances.

Gerrard believes the choice of Marbella makes the Tottenham trip particularly risky, suggesting that other destinations might offer a safer environment for the squad.

He also stressed that Spurs must exercise extra caution given their difficult position in the Premier League table.

“Be very careful, especially if you’re in a position like Spurs, when you’re down the bottom of the table,” Gerrard warned.

While acknowledging that team bonding can deliver positive results, the Liverpool legend insisted that clubs must carefully consider the potential consequences of travelling away during the season.

For Tottenham, the camp is intended to help De Zerbi bring his players closer together and improve their performances ahead of their upcoming clash with Coventry City. However, Gerrard’s comments have raised questions about whether the benefits of the trip outweigh the potential risks.
