Former Manchester United defender and football pundit Gary Neville has criticised Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong, questioning whether the Dutch international can match the attacking and defensive contributions previously provided by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to a report published by Liverpool.com, Neville expressed concerns about Frimpong’s performances following Liverpool’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Neville Questions Frimpong’s Quality
Frimpong joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for approximately £29 million. The Dutch defender arrived with a reputation for explosive pace, attacking movement and his ability to cause problems for opposing defences.
However, Neville believes Liverpool’s new right-back has yet to demonstrate that he can consistently deliver the quality required at Anfield.
The former Manchester United captain argued that Alexander-Arnold was a better defender than Frimpong, despite the criticism the England international frequently received for his defensive performances.
Neville also highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s outstanding creativity, pointing to his ability to contribute between 15 and 20 assists in a season. He questioned whether Frimpong could produce comparable numbers.
Liverpool’s Full-Back Situation Raises Concerns
Neville’s criticism extended beyond Frimpong to include left-back Milos Kerkez.
The pundit suggested that both players might be better suited to a system featuring wing-backs rather than a conventional back four.
He also questioned Liverpool’s decision not to strengthen both full-back positions, warning that the team’s defensive organisation could become a problem if the current system leaves the defenders exposed.
Liverpool’s attacking full-backs have traditionally played an important role in creating chances, but Neville believes the team must find the right balance between attacking contributions and defensive responsibility.
Liverpool Need More Consistency
Liverpool’s early-season results added to the scrutiny surrounding the team’s performances. Consecutive 2-2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest raised questions about the team’s defensive stability.
Frimpong is still adapting to life at Liverpool, and the club will hope he can improve his performances as the season progresses.
Despite the criticism, his pace and attacking potential remain important qualities. The challenge will be turning those attributes into consistent performances while improving his defensive positioning and decision-making.
The Big Question for Liverpool
The debate surrounding Frimpong highlights the challenge Liverpool face in replacing Alexander-Arnold’s unique combination of passing range, creativity and attacking output.
Frimpong offers a different style of play, but he will need to demonstrate that he can become a reliable option at right-back.
Whether he can silence his critics and establish himself as a key player remains to be seen.
What do you think, Liverpool fans? Is Jeremie Frimpong good enough to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, or should Liverpool look for another right-back?
