Sunday’s showdown between Liverpool and Manchester City is shaping up to be more than just another early-season Premier League fixture. City head to Anfield with a perfect record, while Liverpool remain unbeaten but have dropped points after drawing three of their opening five league games.
Former Manchester United star Gary Neville believes this is exactly the kind of occasion when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool would have sensed an opportunity to destroy their title rivals. However, he is not convinced that the current Liverpool team has the same ruthless mentality.
Neville Questions Liverpool’s Ability to Punish City
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Neville expressed his concerns about Liverpool ahead of the highly anticipated clash.
He said: “I’ve got one worry about Sunday. If this was Klopp’s Liverpool they would drive them into the ground and literally finish them off in one day. They’d probably beat them [by] three or four. I’m not sure on this Liverpool team.”
Neville’s comments suggest that, although Liverpool have the opportunity to make a major statement against City, he doubts whether they possess the same intensity and attacking ruthlessness that made Klopp’s best teams so dangerous.
Anfield Could Be Liverpool’s Biggest Weapon
There are reasons behind Neville’s concerns. Liverpool have shown attacking promise this season but have struggled to turn their performances into consistent victories. They have also drawn their last four Premier League matches at Anfield.
Nevertheless, the Reds continue to demonstrate impressive intensity when pressing their opponents. According to Liverpool’s statistical preview, they have applied high-intensity pressure to 48.9 per cent of opposition touches in the attacking half, the highest rate in the Premier League this season.
Manchester City will arrive full of confidence after winning their opening five league matches, but the atmosphere at Anfield could make Sunday’s encounter a difficult test.
Klopp’s Liverpool regularly delivered their best performances in high-pressure matches against their biggest rivals. Now, the current Liverpool side has an opportunity to prove that it can rise to the same challenge.
A convincing victory would not only dent City’s perfect start but also send a strong message to their title rivals.
The big question is whether this Liverpool team can deliver the kind of ruthless performance Neville believes Klopp’s side would have produced.
