Florian Wirtz Could Be Open to Bayern Munich Return as Liverpool Future Comes Under Scrutiny

Florian Wirtz Could Consider Bayern Munich Return as Liverpool Future Comes Under Discussion

Florian Wirtz’s future at Liverpool has reportedly become a talking point following his difficult start to his second season at Anfield.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for a deal that could eventually reach £116 million. However, he has so far struggled to consistently reproduce the form and influence that made him one of the Bundesliga’s standout players.

Liverpool are understood to have no immediate intention of selling Wirtz, but speculation about his long-term future has increased with the January transfer window approaching.

Wirtz Could Be Interested in Bayern Move

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Wirtz could eventually consider returning to Germany if Bayern Munich renew their interest.

Brown suggested that Wirtz has found the physical demands and pace of Premier League football difficult to adjust to. He also noted that some of the midfielder’s stronger performances for Liverpool have come in European competition.

According to Brown, a return to Germany could become an option for Wirtz, particularly if Bayern were to make an approach. He believes the midfielder could be attracted to Bayern because their style of football may suit him.

However, Bayern’s reported interest should not be confused with an active attempt to sign the player. Bayern insider Christian Falk has indicated that the German champions are not currently preparing a move for Wirtz, although they could continue monitoring his situation.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is also reportedly keen for Wirtz to remain at the club and has been experimenting with his position and role in an effort to get the best out of him.

January Departure Would Be Difficult

A move to Bayern could appear attractive because Wirtz already knows German football and was previously admired by the Munich club before eventually joining Liverpool.

However, Liverpool allowing the midfielder to leave just 18 months after spending such a substantial amount on him would represent a significant change in their plans.

Wirtz’s performance in Liverpool’s recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth also raised questions, as he again struggled to have a major influence on the match, although he played a part in the build-up to Alexander Isak’s winning goal.

For now, Liverpool’s priority appears to be helping Wirtz adapt and rediscover his best form rather than rushing into a January transfer.

At just 23, the midfielder still has plenty of time to adjust to English football, meaning Bayern Munich’s interest could be one to watch, but a mid-season departure currently appears complicated.
