Liverpool’s previous interest in Marco Palestra, who ultimately joined Chelsea from Atalanta this summer.
Liverpool considered Marco Palestra transfer
Liverpool reportedly made an attempt to sign Italian right-back Marco Palestra last summer, with an offer of around €20 million said to have been rejected. Despite missing out, Liverpool reportedly continued to monitor the defender.
Palestra, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Cagliari, impressed with 37 Serie A appearances, one goal and four assists. His performances attracted interest from several major clubs, including Liverpool, Inter, Arsenal and Newcastle.
Liverpool were previously reported to view the 21-year-old as a potential long-term option at right-back, with his defensive ability, pace and attacking contribution making him an attractive target. Reports had suggested a possible fee in the region of €45 million.
However, Liverpool eventually missed out. Chelsea completed Palestra’s signing from Atalanta for around £47 million, with the Italian defender signing a long-term contract through 2033.
So, the key takeaway is: Liverpool wanted Palestra and had previously tried to sign him, but Chelsea ultimately won the race for the highly-rated Italian full-back.
