Tottenham youngster Yang Min-Hyeok celebrates major international success with South Korea

Tottenham Hotspur have another reason to celebrate after 20-year-old prospect Yang Min-Hyeok helped South Korea win the men’s football gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.

South Korea defeated Japan 1-0 in the final, securing their fourth consecutive Asian Games football title. Yang was handed a starting role in the decisive match and played an important part in the winning moment.

The Tottenham loanee worked tirelessly on the right side and remained involved for 66 minutes. His persistence eventually paid off when he won possession on the flank and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. His effort helped create the opening for Eom Ji-sung, who finished to give Korea the lead.

That goal proved decisive as South Korea defended their advantage until the final whistle.

The triumph is particularly significant for Yang after a difficult period at club level. The young winger joined Tottenham from Gangwon FC and has spent much of his time developing through loan spells. He is currently playing for Belgian side Westerlo while looking to establish himself at the highest level.

His Asian Games campaign had not been straightforward either. Yang had been substituted early in previous matches and was left out of the starting XI for the semi-final against China. However, he was given another opportunity in the final and responded with one of his most important performances of the tournament.

The gold medal also has major personal significance for Yang because South Korean players who win Asian Games gold receive an exemption from mandatory military service. Yang admitted that resolving his military-service situation was a major motivation for him throughout the competition.

The victory also brings back memories for Tottenham supporters of Heung Min Son, who helped South Korea win the same tournament in 2018.

With Yang now returning to his club duties as an Asian Games champion, Tottenham will be hoping the experience gives the talented youngster a major confidence boost. His contribution in the final could prove an important step as he continues trying to make his mark in European football.

For Spurs, having a 20-year-old loanee return with international gold-medal experience is another positive development for a player the club continues to monitor closely.
