Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Archie Gray reached another important milestone in his young career after captaining England Under-21s to qualification for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
The 20-year-old was given the captain’s armband for England’s crucial qualifier against Slovakia at the bet365 Stadium on Friday night. Gray started the match and played the full 90 minutes as the Young Lions secured the point they needed with a 0-0 draw.

🇬🇧 England secure their place
England entered the match knowing that avoiding a heavy defeat would be enough to confirm their place at next summer’s tournament.
The Young Lions dominated much of the first half and created several opportunities but could not find the breakthrough. Will Lankshear came close on multiple occasions, while Max Alleyne struck the post following a corner.
Tyrique George was also a constant threat on the left, while Ethan Nwaneri and Josh Acheampong tested the Slovakian defence.
Slovakia became more dangerous after the interval and created a few nervous moments for England, but Lee Carsley’s side held firm to claim the point required to finish top of their qualifying group. (https://www.englandfootball.com)
🏆 Gray can defend his title
The qualification is particularly significant for Gray because he already knows what it feels like to win the Under-21 European Championship.
The Tottenham midfielder was part of the England side that lifted the trophy in 2025, meaning he will now have the opportunity to help the Young Lions defend their title next summer.

One qualifier remains
England still have one final qualifying match to play, travelling to face the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday, October 6.
However, the result will not change England’s position at the top of the group because their qualification and first place have already been secured. (Tottenham Hotspur)
For Tottenham, Gray’s latest international achievement is another positive sign of his development. Captaining England at just 20 highlights the growing responsibility he is taking on, while another major international tournament awaits him next summer.
Archie Gray is already a European champion. Now he gets another chance to defend the crown. 🤍💙
