Cody Gakpo Injury Update: How Many Liverpool Matches Could He Miss?

Cody Gakpo Injury: How Many Liverpool Games Could He Miss?

Liverpool could be without Cody Gakpo for several weeks after the Netherlands international suffered an ankle injury during the recent international break.

Gakpo was forced off during the Netherlands’ match against Serbia after being caught by a strong challenge from Serbian midfielder Saša Lukić. Although Lukić appeared to make contact with the ball first, his follow-through caught Gakpo and left the Liverpool forward struggling to continue.

The injury was subsequently assessed in Eindhoven, with Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink reporting that Gakpo is expected to spend several weeks recovering.

Gakpo had made an impressive start

The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate for Liverpool because Gakpo had begun the 2026/27 season in excellent form.

The Dutch forward had recorded six goal contributions in his first six appearances across the Premier League and Carabao Cup. His partnership with Alexander Isak had also started to develop, giving Liverpool another attacking combination to rely on.

However, Gakpo’s absence could now come at a difficult point in Liverpool’s schedule.

Alexander Isak is also dealing with an injury concern, meaning Liverpool could potentially be without two important attacking players when domestic football resumes.

Which matches could Gakpo miss?

The exact length of Gakpo’s recovery remains uncertain, but the initial indication is that he could be unavailable for several weeks.

If his recovery takes roughly three weeks, Liverpool could potentially be without him for three matches:

– Manchester City — October 11
– LASK — October 14
– Brentford — October 17

The biggest concern would be the Premier League meeting with Manchester City at Anfield. Liverpool could also have to manage without Gakpo for the following fixtures against LASK and Brentford.

There is also a possibility that his recovery could extend far enough to put his participation in the Champions League fixture against Villarreal in doubt.

Liverpool may need other attacking options

With Gakpo potentially unavailable and Isak also facing an injury issue, Liverpool could be forced to make changes to their attacking lineup.

Bradley Barcola and Lewis Koumas could be among the players expected to feature, while Victor Munoz and Rio Ngumoha could also have opportunities to make an impact.

For Munoz or Ngumoha, Gakpo’s absence could represent an important opportunity. A strong performance during this period could help either player earn more minutes once Liverpool’s squad returns to full strength.

Liverpool will therefore be hoping that Gakpo’s injury is not as serious as initially feared. A more detailed assessment after his return to Merseyside should provide a clearer indication of when he can return to action.
