Cody Gakpo could miss several Liverpool games

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has suffered an ankle injury while on international duty with the Netherlands. He was forced off after just 17 minutes during the Netherlands’ 2–1 win over Serbia following a challenge from Serbia midfielder Sasa Lukic.

Gakpo subsequently withdrew from the Netherlands squad and returned to Liverpool for further assessment at the AXA Training Centre. Liverpool confirmed that he would miss the rest of the international fixtures during the current break.

Reports subsequently suggested that scans indicated Gakpo could be sidelined for several weeks. If his recovery takes around three weeks, he could miss Liverpool’s scheduled matches against:

* Manchester City — October 11
* LASK — October 14
* Brentford — October 17

He could also be a doubt for the Champions League match against Villarreal on October 20, depending on his recovery.

The injury is particularly significant because Gakpo had reportedly made an excellent start to the 2026/27 campaign, registering six goal contributions in six games across the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Liverpool could therefore have to rely more heavily on players such as Bradley Barcola, Lewis Koumas, Victor Muñoz or Rio Ngumoha if Gakpo and other attacking options are unavailable.

Important: Liverpool’s official update confirms the ankle injury and further assessment, while the “several weeks” timeline comes from subsequent reporting rather than Liverpool’s official medical statement.
