Sandro Tonali Addresses Tottenham Struggles as Italian Media Raise Concerns
Sandro Tonali has addressed Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season, insisting that there are still positive signs despite the club’s disappointing results.
The midfielder joined Spurs during the summer transfer window in a huge £100 million move from Newcastle United, becoming one of Tottenham’s major additions under manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, the team has struggled to produce results in the Premier League and went into the international break at the bottom of the table after losing 3-2 to Aston Villa.
Tonali, who is currently away with the Italy national team, acknowledged that the atmosphere around Tottenham is negative because of their results. However, he believes the performances themselves have provided reasons for optimism.
Speaking ahead of Italy’s Nations League fixture, Tonali explained that football can change very quickly and that a difficult situation can become a positive one within a matter of days.
He described Tottenham’s current position as negative from a results perspective but said there have been encouraging aspects to the way the team has played.
According to Tonali, Spurs have been creating opportunities and enjoying their football despite failing to convert enough of their chances. He stressed that scoring goals is ultimately what decides matches, but argued that Tottenham are far from giving up.
The midfielder also expressed confidence in the quality within Tottenham’s squad, suggesting that the team has enough ability to turn its fortunes around if the results begin to follow the performances.
Tonali’s comments come at a difficult moment personally as well. His performances for both club and country have attracted criticism, particularly after Italy’s 2-0 Nations League defeat to Belgium.
Italian media outlets have focused heavily on the £100 million midfielder following that match. Gazzetta dello Sport questioned Tonali’s recent form and argued that he failed to make the expected impact during a major international fixture. The newspaper also highlighted his battle with Kevin De Bruyne, suggesting that the Belgian midfielder had the greater influence during the game.
The criticism has added to the pressure surrounding Tonali, especially given the enormous transfer fee Tottenham paid for his services. His move reportedly made him the most expensive Italian player in football history, increasing expectations around his performances.
Despite the criticism, Tonali has remained positive about Tottenham’s situation. He believes the team’s ability to create chances shows that there are foundations to build on, even though the lack of goals has cost Spurs valuable points.
The Italian midfielder also urged patience when discussing the national team, pointing out that Italy are working with a relatively new and young group of players who have not had much time to play together.
For Tottenham, Tonali’s message is clear: the poor results do not necessarily tell the entire story of the team’s performances. Spurs now need to turn their promising moments into goals and points when domestic football resumes.
With pressure increasing on both Tonali and Tottenham, the coming matches will provide an opportunity for the midfielder to respond on the pitch and help De Zerbi’s side begin moving away from the bottom of the Premier League table.
