Roberto De Zerbi Defends Rodrigo Bentancur After Controversial Clash With Luke Shaw
Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has publicly supported Rodrigo Bentancur following the midfielder’s controversial sending-off during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Bentancur was shown a red card after becoming involved in a heated confrontation with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw. The incident occurred in the second half, shortly after United had taken the lead through Bryan Mbeumo.
Despite losing a player, Tottenham showed determination and fought their way back into the match, with Dominic Solanke scoring a late equaliser to secure a valuable point for the visitors.
De Zerbi Explains His Reaction to Bentancur
De Zerbi surprised many observers with his response to the incident, revealing that he embraced Bentancur in the dressing room after the match and thanked him for showing the fighting spirit he wanted from his players.
The Italian manager acknowledged that the midfielder had made a mistake by reacting aggressively, but he believed Tottenham needed to demonstrate greater determination and refuse to give up when facing difficult situations.
According to De Zerbi, his team had lacked the necessary character and intensity in previous matches. He felt the players finally showed a stronger sense of unity and commitment at Old Trafford, particularly after being reduced to ten men.
However, the manager made it clear that he was not encouraging players to get sent off. Instead, he wanted them to respond to setbacks with courage, energy and a determination to fight for the team.
What Happened Between Bentancur and Shaw?
The confrontation began after Bentancur made a reckless challenge during the match. Shaw reacted angrily and pushed the Tottenham midfielder, leading to a heated exchange between the two players.
Bentancur then moved his head towards Shaw, prompting referee Stuart Attwell to send him off for violent conduct. Shaw also received a yellow card for his involvement in the incident.
The dismissal left Tottenham in a difficult position, with the visitors trailing 1-0 and facing the challenge of finishing the match with ten players.
Solanke Rescues Tottenham in Dramatic Fashion
Despite the setback, Tottenham refused to surrender. De Zerbi’s players continued pushing forward and were rewarded when Solanke scored a late equaliser in stoppage time.
The striker headed home a cross from Sandro Tonali, rescuing a point for Spurs and giving the travelling supporters something to celebrate.
De Zerbi was particularly pleased with Solanke’s contribution, praising the striker’s quality, character and commitment to the team.
The manager also defended the forward against criticism, insisting that Tottenham needed to support their players rather than question their abilities during a difficult period.
De Zerbi Demands More Character From His Team
Although Tottenham earned a draw, De Zerbi knows his team still have considerable work to do. The club have struggled to secure victories in the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign, increasing pressure on the manager and his players.
Nevertheless, he believes the performance against Manchester United could provide a foundation for improvement.
De Zerbi praised his players for remaining united, working hard defensively and continuing to believe they could get something from the match despite their numerical disadvantage.
He also stressed that technical quality alone would not be enough to turn Tottenham’s season around. The team must combine their footballing ability with stronger mentality, greater intensity and a willingness to fight for one another.
The Tottenham manager will now hope his players can carry that determination into their upcoming fixtures and begin turning encouraging performances into victories.
For Bentancur, however, the red card means he faces a suspension, leaving Tottenham to find alternatives in midfield while he serves his ban.
